“37Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” — Matthew 5:37
Read: Matthew 5
One of the gifts I saw exchanged this Christmas was a plastic Jesus action figure. It had wheels on its feet, they called it “gliding action”. It seems outrageous, but I wonder if this is just an extension of our Christian culture today. I m reminded of a scene in the movie “Saved” where the youth leader in a private Christian school stands in front of the youth and yells our crazy stuff like, “Are you ready to get your Jesus on?” This character was trying to appeal to the youth, he was doing what a lot of churches do out there, trying to prepackage Jesus into a shiny new novelty, something that will get youth excited.
Not long after the gift was received, the plastic Jesus was shoved into a forgotten corner of the house, the novelty had worn off. Isn’t that true for our faith as well? We easily get excited about following Christ at a concert, bible study, or worship service, but do we carry it our into our everyday lives?
Here’s your challenge today. Be Jesus, not the plastic Jesus, but the real, in-the-flesh Jesus. If a friend is having trouble, don’t say you’ll pray for her, then walk away without another thought. Stop right there, pray for her, be the love of Christ to her. Where else can you be more than plastic? How can you be a living example of Christ for others today? Give yourself more credit than many church workers do. Don’t accept the prepackaged Christianity they are serving you… be real, genuine, organic. Be more than an excited youth on a Sunday evening, be a person of faith stepping up to the challenge Christ issued you…Go and love God’s kids.
Prayer: God, show me how to be real – Amen
